76 years ago today, a Japanese surprise attack devastated the US military at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. More than 2400 Americans are killed as oil on the sea becomes an inferno. A day later, the United States enters World War II as the US Congress approves a declaration of war against Japan. For the US, the war ends 3 1/2 years and more than 416,000 deaths later.
Estimates place the total number of deaths during World War II at 85,000,000, or nearly 4% of the world’s population at the time.
